What is Specialized Industrial Construction?

Industrial Construction deals with the building, repairing, renovating, and maintaining of the mechanical and structural components in facilities such as factories, power plants, warehouses, and other specialized infrastructures. “Industrial” refers to buildings built for functionality. Whether they manufacture goods or produce electricity, they are for economic purposes and usually serve large communities. These buildings must be constructed to meet industry-specific regulations and local, state, or federal codes.

Gracon has completed several industrial building construction projects in markets, including:

  • Food and beverage
  • Hydro
  • Dams
  • Piping
  • Electrical

What are The Four Different Types of Construction?

The construction industry is divided into four categories: Residential, heavy industrial, institutional and commercial, and engineering.

New Home Building and Renovation

New home building and renovation, or residential construction, involves construction on buildings or properties intended for private occupancy. These involve single-family homes, cottages, semi-detached homes, row houses and apartment buildings.

Heavy Industrial Construction

Heavy industrial building involves the construction of extensive industrial facilities like power and nuclear plants, mine and oil sands and refineries that carry a high capital cost. Items produced in this sector include iron, coal, oil, etc.

Engineering Construction

Engineering construction includes designing, developing and maintaining municipal or state buildings and infrastructures, such as roads and power supplies. This includes roads, railroads, bridges, tunnels, airports and more.

Institutional and Commercial Construction

Institutional and commercial construction includes designing, renovating and building commercial buildings, such as grocery and retail stores, restaurants, office buildings, medical facilities and more.

What is Included in Industrial Construction?

What is Included in Industrial Construction?

Industrial building construction, also known as heavy civil construction, refers to buildings or structures intended for use in industrial fields. These establishments include factories, warehouses, power plants or large government and city projects.

The main difference between industrial and commercial construction is that industrial construction happens on a larger scale and includes work on large structures such as mining plants, factories, assembly plants, and more. Commercial construction involves building for businesses that operate to make a profit. The work specialized industrial construction companies do is highly technical, requiring a specific skill set and immense training.

What are Examples of Industrial Construction?

Industrial construction can occur across different industrial sectors, also known as Gracon’s five divisions. Here are a few examples:

Food processing and manufacturing: Food processing and manufacturing facilities are an essential part food supply chain. These facilities are intended to transform raw food materials into products fit for consumption, cooking, or sale.

Hydropower construction: Hydropower facilities harness energy from the natural flow of water and account for 31.5% of total U.S. renewable electricity generation. There are three types of hydropower facilities: impoundment, diversion, and pumped storage. Some hydropower plants use dams but some do not.

Dam construction: Dams are built across rivers to create a reserve that stores water that flows into it naturally. Dams hold water for later use, irrigation, navigation, hydropower, flood control, and more. Dam gate construction includes a radial, slide, crest, miter, and drum gates.

Piping construction: Piping construction is the building of pipe systems to transport fluids, liquids, and gases from one location to another. Projects can require slip-lining large-diameter pipes or connecting mechanical systems.

Electrical construction: This subset of construction includes the installation of electrical wiring, which includes preparation, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing wiring, fixtures, control devices, and related equipment in specialized buildings and structures.
